The LG G2 is finally official with a 5.2-inch screen, Snapdragon 800 to Compete with SAMSUNG S4

Abandoning the Optimus branding for its highest-end devices, today LG finally announced their latest flagship - the LG G2.
At 5.2-inches, the LG G2 has a slightly bigger screen than the current crop of high-end smartphones. The resolution however, is the same at 1920 x 1080 px. The screen is a IPS unit with a brightness rating of 450nits. The LG G2 display uses something called Graphic RAM (GRAM) to reduce power consumption up to 26% when displaying a still image. LG claims this increases the expected overall battery life by up to 10%.
What's particularly striking about the phone is ultra-slim bezel and the lack of any hardware keys on the front (or sides, for that matter).

The only hardware key is actually positioned on the back. It's actually a combo of several buttons in one. That's the power/sleep key dead center along with the volume keys. The volume keys also double as shortcuts for the camera and Quick Memo feature. The reason behind the decision to position this key here is to make handling extra large smartphones easier and less prone to dropping.
The LG G2 is based around a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chipset with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 GPU. According to Qualcomm's CEO, who appeared in stage today, the G2 is the first phone to launch on a world-wide scale with this top-shelf processor.
The storage capacity is set at either 16GB or 32GB. Supposedly, there is a microSD slot as well, but it seems that will only be available in certain markets and the units LG brought to NYC didn't have such a thing.
The 13MP camera is on par with the rest of the top notch hardware. It's got optical image stabilization (OIS) and can record FullHD 1080p videos in up to 60fps.
LG has also worked hard on the quality of audio output. The phone can reproduce Hi-Fi 24 bit/192kHz. LG has also collaborated with the Vienna Boy's Choir to freshen up the available sounds and ringtones on the device.
The LG G2 runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box.
As customary for Android flagships, the LG G2 offers several proprietary features to differentiate. You can double tap on the screen to wake it up and tap again to turn it back off. The phone will readily auto answer a call when you pick it up to your ear. There is an innovative Guest mode to secure the privacy of your data when friends want to check out your new smartphone or when you hand down your phone to your kid.
Finally, you can get rid of a currently active app and minimize it by a three-finger swipe across the screen.
Speaking of multi-tasking, the G2 can store your app progress in up to three different apps. The screenshotting feature can capture a whole webpage or a long email, not just the content in your viewport.
The LG G2 also has an Infrared port that can be used to remotely control home entertainment devices by learning from their conventional remotes.
Connectivity-wise, the LG G2 makes use of the latest generation LTE-A connectivity (up to 150Mbps), as well as dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.
For power backup, the LG G2 relies on a 3,000mAh Li-Po battery.
LG G2 will be available in black or white and will launch to over 130 carriers in the next eight weeks starting in South Korea, followed by North America, Europe and other key markets.

New Google Nexus 7 (2013) vs Amazon Kindle Fire HD: Spec comparison

New Google Nexus 7 (2013) vs Amazon Kindle Fire HD: Spec comparison
The second-generation Google Nexus 7 is a definite improvement over its predecessor. It's slimmer, lighter, and boasts a higher quality screen with a sharper resolution. It may be a no-brainer to upgrade from the old to the new Nexus 7, but how does the new Google tablet compare to some of its existing 7in rivals? In this article, we're going to compare the Nexus 7 (2013) to the nearly year-old Amazon Kindle Fire HD.
First, there are some basic design differences to note: The Nexus 7 is 7mm longer, but shaves off 23mm in the width department compared to the Kindle Fire HD. Google's newest tablet is also noticeably lighter than Amazon's tablet – 100 grams lighter, in fact, and it’s almost 2mm thinner.
Getting into the nitty-gritty details, there are other stark differences between the two tablets' capabilities. One of the most obvious is their screen resolutions. The Nexus 7 sports an impressive 1,920 x 1,200-pixel resolution, while the Kindle Fire HD has a 1,280 x 800 display – and that's enough to make text considerably less crisp.
The Kindle Fire HD's front-facing camera sensor is 1.3 megapixels, and Amazon’s tablet doesn't have a rear camera. On the other hand, the Nexus 7 features a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear shooter.
Other differences include CPU speed, operating systems, and cellular capability. The Nexus 7 has a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, while the Kindle Fire HD's is just a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU.
The latter tablet runs Amazon’s custom operating system over a base layer of Android 4.0, whereas the Nexus 7 has the latest version of Jelly Bean, Android 4.3. The new Nexus 7 also has a cellular-capable (4G LTE) option which the Fire HD doesn’t offer.
So, despite their obvious similarity in size, there are only a few commonalities between the two tablets: The 7in display, Bluetooth, and 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi compatibility. They also have similar battery lives; the Kindle Fire HD managed seven hours, while the Nexus 7 lasted 37 minutes longer on the same battery rundown test.

The main area in which the Fire HD has an advantage is, of course, price, with the Amazon slate costing £40 less for the base version, and £60 less for the 32GB model. You pays your money, and takes your choice, as they say – although you can’t buy the new Nexus 7 just yet in the UK. It’s expected to become available in September (although some sources are saying it will be later this month). At any rate, it’s probably worth waiting for...

Google's Second-Gen Nexus 7 May Be Limited To 3.5 Million Units

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG [FREE Stock Trend Analysis]) was expected ship as many as eight million units of the second-generation Nexus 7 in 2013.
A new report by DigiTimes indicated that may not be the case.
According to the Taiwan-based supply chain publication, global shipments are estimated to come in at 3.5 million units -- less than half of the original estimate. It is also half the number of units that the original Nexus 7 sold in one year.
The unusually low number is being blamed on the device's limited reach. Unlike the iPad and its miniature counterpart, the new Nexus 7 will reportedly skip out on the Chinese market.
Google's lower-than-expected shipments are also being blamed on the increasing number of low-cost seven-inch tablets.

When the first Nexus 7 arrived last year, Google's biggest threat was Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN). Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) posed a threat as well, but Surface's 10-inch display and $500 MSRP put it in an entirely separate class. The same could be said for the third-generation iPad, especially after sales of that unit began to decline.
Today, the Nexus 7 faces competition from Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) current iPad Mini and its anticipated successor, Hewlett-Packard's (NYSE: HPQ) Slate 7 and a rising number of cheap clones.
GigaOM recently wrote about a little-known $149 tablet, the Hisense Sero 7 Pro, that is supposedly just as good as the original Nexus 7. Available at Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), the Sero 7 Pro includes the following specs:
  • NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) Tegra 3 quad-core processor
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
  • Seven-inch, 1280 x 800 IPS display
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB of on-board memory
  • 2.0MP front camera
  • 5.0MP rear camera with flash and auto-focus
  • Mini HDMI, SD, and USB ports
  • 10-hour battery life
Those specs are a bit lower than the next-generation Nexus 7, but Hisense's device is also $80 cheaper.
In addition to these devices, Google will also face competition from a number of tablets that are expected to ship this fall.

Tablets or Laptops-- or BOTH

Tablet-cum-laptops – New potential market emerging

Leaders in PC manufacturing such as HP, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo are eager to have a larger share of newly emerging tablet cum laptop market. The giants are coming with hybrid devices soon.
untitled2 Tablet cum laptops – New potential market emerging
The forerunners in PC marketing have responded to the recent consumer shift to tablets and SmartPhones by offering new range of touch screen devices. To balance the declining sales of laptops and desktops, US based Dell and Hewlett Packard along with Asian companies Acer and Lenovo are coming up with touch based hybrid devices which can work like both laptops and tablets.
Statistics show that the Indian PC market has grown only 3.5% while SmartPhone segment recorded an increment of 48% in 2013. The total number of PCs sold in India is 11 million units while SmartPhones stand at 16.3 million units.
Dell considers Indian market as one of the faster growing markets. The company is canvassing its touch screen laptops to students and parents in the country’s smaller towns. It is a notable point that during previous month, HP launched six new touch-responsive computers in Indian market.
Analysts opine that touch-screen usage will increase in developing countries such as India, Indonesia and Brazil.  PC makers HP, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo are hoping on touch-based laptops and hybrid devices to overcome the crunch in PC sales.
Component and chipmakers are also thinking in the same way. Intel has cut its sales outlook following weak PC sales. In May, Intel also started a campaign in educational institutes in India to raise awareness about PCs among students, in an attempt to increase sales.
