When will my phone get the Android 4.4 KitKat update: here is what we know

When will my phone get the Android 4.4 KitKat update: here is what we know

Google announced Android 4.4 KitKat yesterday and it is a fairly big update to the world’s most popular platform, but question remains: when will you be able to get it?

*We will be updating this post continuously as more information comes in. Last update (Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and 2013 Motorola Droid phones have started getting KitKat!): Jan - 15th - 2014.

It’s a tricky one as always with Android. Google claimed it has made huge optimizations to the platform and its core apps so even devices with 512MB of RAM (the overwhelming majority of Androids across the world are actually low-end devices with 512MB of RAM) can have a good, smooth Android experience.

The new Android 4.4 KitKat however still seems to be coming first and only to the top-shelf devices. Here is the list of phones we know will get the update. We have added a timeframe for that update. The information comes straight from the manufacturer, so it is official, not a rumor.

If you are wondering about a device that is not on the list, chances are the manufacturer either has not yet announced plans or the device will not get the KitKat update.

With no further ado, here is when Android 4.4 is coming to various devices:

11 Micromax Canvas smartphones rumored to get Android 4.4 KitKat update

micromax-canvas-turbo-gallery-2
Micromax offered Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) update for the A116 Canvas HD back in June. But both the Canvas 4 and the Canvas Turbo were launched on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) with no sign of future upgrades even though these have built-on OTA update support.  MMXNewscaster, popular for smartphone leaks has tweeted that Micromax plans to release Android 4.4 (KitKat) update for 11 Canvas devices and 3 Canvas smartphones would be upgraded to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). If this turns out to be true, its an awesome news for the Canvas users, since they would get the Android 4.4 directly, skipping the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update.
List of Micromax Canvas devices rumored to get Android 4.4 (KitKat) update
  • Micromax A250 Canvas Turbo
  • Micromax A240 Canvas Doodle 2
  • Micromax A210 Canvas 4
  • Micromax A200 (Rumored Canvas smartphone)
  • Micromax A117 Canvas Magnus
  • Micromax A116 Canvas HD
  • Micromax A116i Canvas HD
  • Micromax A114 Canvas 2.2
  • Micromax A111 Canvas Doodle
  • Micromax A110Q Canvas 2 Plus
  • Micromax A110 Canvas 2
List  Micromax Canvas devices rumored to get Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) update
  • Micromax A115 Canvas 3D
  • Micromax A101
  • Micromax A100
The exact time frame of the roll out is not available yet. Since this is just a rumor at the moment, we can’t confirm if Micromax would release the KitKat update for all these devices, until we get an official word. Even though Android KitKat supports devices with 512MB of RAM, we have not seen a single entry-level smartphone running on Android 4.4 out of the box. Wickedleak announced Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Wammy Passion Z+ last week. Everyone want too see other OEMs to offer KitKat update for their devices.

Micromax Canvas XL A119 with 6-inch qHD display, quad-core processor launched for Rs. 13990

Micromax Canvas XL
Micromax has launched Canvas XL A119, the company’s first phablet with a 6-inch display. It comes with dual SIM support with dual standby, similar to other Micromax smartphones.
The company had already launched the Canvas Doodle 2 A240 with a 5.7-inch HD screen and aluminium body. We felt it huge in our review, but the display was impressive. Even though this has just 1GB RAM, it packs a memory card slot and a 2450 mAh battery.

Micromax Canvas Turbo Unboxing

micromax-canvas-turbo-unboxing-1
Today, we bring you the unboxing of Micromax Canvas Turbo, the latest and greatest from Micromax in the highly popular canvas series of devices. Hugh Jackman was a huge score for the company as it plans to push its limits beyond the Indian borders. Announced in October for a price of Rs. 19,990, the phones marquee features are its full HD display, its quad core 1.5 GHz MediaTek MTK6589T processor with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of ROM. With quick successions to the flagship range, how does the Canvas Turbo differ from the Canvas 4 and the Canvas HD? Ideally, we will be able to talk about it in our review, but here’s a quick unboxing video for a quick overview of the box contents and the device itself -

As you can see from the video and the image above, the box is pretty similar to what we had in the Micromax Canvas 4, and hence the box contents are pretty similar too. Th list of contents are -
  • Micromax Canvas Turbo in Midnight black colour
  • Black tangle free in-ear headset with mic
  • Flat and tangle-free micro USB cable
  • Extra ear buds for the headset
  • Travel charger with USB port
  • Information booklets for SAR, features, Warranty and user manual.
  • Micromax branded SIM ejector tool
We were sorta bummed to see it not include a flip cover because that seems to be the number two accessory purchase right after the screen guard, which too, is missing from the box. But with the quality of the components, like the premium ear phones or the micro USB cable, we can’t really complain. The box packaging sports the specs on the back, you can take a quick look at it here -
micromax-canvas-turbo-unboxing-15
So, there you go, those are the specifications of the Micromax Canvas Turbo. Pretty similar to the Canvas 4 except for the build, the internals and the display.
micromax-canvas-turbo-unboxing-2
Talking of the display, the Micromax Canvas Turbo has a 5 inch full HD 1080p IPS display that looks really slick, when turned off. This is evidence of a bonded display, which Micromax calls CGS – Continuous grain silicon. In real, the display looks really dense and has nice viewing angles. We will be testing out the display in detail and report more, later.
micromax-canvas-turbo-unboxing-3
The back is designed very similarly to the Canvas Doodle 2. It feels great in the hand thanks to the curved edges and the metal finish for the most part of the back. The sides are in plastic though, which makes it exactly opposite of the Canvas 4′s build, which is predominantly plastic with a premium finish on the sides.
micromax-canvas-turbo-unboxing-16
Since the back is sealed and has a non removable 2000 mAH battery, it has allowed the phone to be thinner at 8.6mm and the two dual micro SIM slots are on the sides, forcing the company to use the power button and volume rocker combined, on the other side. Our first impressions of the Canvas Turbo are solid, but we should give it more time until we form strong opinions about the product, which we will do eventually. So, until then, keep an eye on our YouTube channel for the subsequent coverage of the Micromax Canvas Turbo and stay tuned to the blog for more.
Here are the rest of the box contents -

Nokia Asha 502 vs Asha 503 Dual SIM comparison: What’s different?

nokia-asha-502-vs-5-3-photos-13
If you had noticed, we have been taking a look at brand new Asha devices the past few days. We first unboxed the Asha 502 and the Asha 503 and showed you separate photos of both the devices, but we are sure that a single question arises when one takes a look at similarly designed models. The Asha 502 and the Asha 503 have a lot in common. They have similar design, they have the same operating system and almost the same hardware except for a few things. But those few things make the real difference and ultimately end up as a choice in offering from the company, with naturally differing price points. So, what are they? What are the differences between the Nokia Asha 502 and the Asha 503? Lets find out.

The video above should have given you a fair idea of the differences between the two, but in case you skipped, let us walk you through the differences, in pictures.

Lets see the obvious hardware differences first. The Asha 503, in black, seems to be longer than the Asha 502. As you can note from the picture above, the 503 not only looks taller but seems to have disproportionate vertical bezels too, with the bottom one bigger and the back capacitive button higher. This would not result in any changes to actual usage but it’s worth noting that the Asha 502 is more handy. It’s a petite device that’s really comfortable in the hands.

Another obvious difference we could note is that the Asha 502 doesn’t have a frame protecting it’s ever slightly curved screen while the 503 does, if you look closely.
nokia-asha-502-vs-5-3-photos-12
Both have a highly glossy finish on the outside, which doubles up as protection and unique design. The iced frost look is something we want to see in other devices like the Lumias too, but that might not be feasible. You can also note the minor changes in the placement of the battery door wedge, the beauty sport and the camera lens and LED flash positions.
nokia-asha-502-vs-5-3-photos-6
Talking of the camera, both come with the same 5 megapixel unit and perform almost exactly the same, indicating that both possibly have the same sensor and lens combination. It is a fixed focus camera with a single LED flash.
nokia-asha-502-vs-5-3-photos-5
Display wise, the phones are not much different. They both have the same 3 inch QVGA screens but we noted that the 503′s display is a bit cooler, with whites having bluish tones than the 502, which is warmer and more likeable in our opinion.
nokia-asha-502-vs-5-3-photos-11
But the main difference between these two phones is under the hood. The Asha 503, being the costlier one, comes with a 3G modem. Yes, the Asha 503 supports 3G on one SIM and 2G on the other, while the 502 is full fledged 2G. Due to this single factor, we are seeing different design decisions in terms of length and more importantly, the battery. The Asha 503 comes with a slightly larger 1200 mAH battery while the 502 comes with a 1010 mAH unit. Practically, this is to compensate the extra battery drain that is expect from using the 3G modem.
nokia-asha-502-vs-5-3-photos-1
The above differences aside, both the Ashas are exactly the same. They run on the same new Asha SW Platform 1.1.1 and have new features like Whatsapp support and better privacy controls for the fast lane among many other small improvements. Both the phones are part of the same portfolio and are meant to offer different choices to the consumers in need of those. If you want 3G, Asha 503 is the one you should get, but if you are totally fine with 2G, the 502 is a great compact quasi-smartphone with Whatsapp, mails and even some small apps. The Asha 502 will cost you Rs. 5,969 while the Asha 503 will cost you around Rs. 6,799. Paying a small premium for the 3G functionality is entirely up to choice.

Xolo Q3000 Unboxing and First Impressions

xolo-q3000-unboxing-2
The Xolo Q3000 is the first device from the company to incorporate a full HD 1080p screen. Yes, it took a while for Xolo to do that, as we saw the 5.5 inch Q2000 sporting a 720p screen even when it had the MT6589 Turbo inside. But with the Q3000, Xolo has its first 5.7″ device as well as its first 1080p phone, so we felt it would be pretty interesting to check this phone out. So, here you go, the unboxing video of the Q3000 where we will show you the box contents and a quick overview of the phone itself -

Here are the box contents of the Q3000, which surprised us with a few interesting additions -
xolo-q3000-unboxing-6
Box Contents -
  • Xolo Q3000 in black
  • Flip Cover(Unconventional)
  • Extra scratch guard
  • USB Travel Charger plug
  • micro USB cable
  • micro USB OTG cable
  • Xolo branded headset with mic(not in-ear)
  • Information booklet and warranty/safety guide
Out of all these box contents, we found that the USB OTG is one of those rare additions that we usually don’t see on other phones, let alone tablets. The other interesting addition was the kickstand-cum-flip cover, which uses sticky yet not icky adhesive to stick to the phone’s back rather than completely replacing the back panel, which is the norm with many of the devices today.
xolo-q3000-unboxing-10
This is how it sticks, after carefully adjusting it to the correct position(it was hard). It doesn’t leave marks on the back of the phone, which is surprising as the cover’s grip on the phone is very very strong. It also doubles up as a kick stand -
xolo-q3000-unboxing-5
With a large 5.7 inch full HD screen which is very likeable for watching videos, the unconventional flip cover is definitely a very good addition in the box, we feel. And then we have the USB OTG cable too -
xolo-q3000-unboxing-7
This will allow you to connect all kinds of peripherals to the Xolo Q3000, like even a PS3 controller to play games. The kickstand now seems like an even better idea, but the gaming part is subject to the device’s performance of course, which we will see about, later in our reviews. Onto the phone now.
xolo-q3000-unboxing-1
The phone is huge. It really is, but thanks to small bezels on the sides, it’s not too hard to handle. The IPS screen is covered by gently curved glass which looks great in terms of design, and the display is as good, in terms of performance. With great viewing angles and a crisp 368 ppi, this is one of the better screens we have seen at this price range.
xolo-q3000-unboxing-11
The back is made of soft touch plastic, which is in complete contrast with the cheap plastic strip on the top that houses the camera, the secondary mic and the loud speakers. Underneath the cover, we have the massive 4000 mAH battery, another first for Xolo and its phones, which should provide long standing battery life, we hope. But more on the phone later, we will have a complete review for you soon, and of course a lot of videos too, so stay tuned!
Meanwhile, here are some more pictures of the box contents -
